The Association has the following categories of membership;

  • members

  • associate members

Any person who satisfies the following criteria is eligible to become a member or associate member (as the case may be);

Members Criteria

 To be eligible to become a member a person must:

  • be an Australian lawyer living or working within the geographical area set out in the Rules; and

  • be a member of the Law Institute of Victoria.

Associate Members Criteria

To be eligible to become an Associate Member a person must:

  • be an Australian lawyer or be undertaking a course of study, training or work experience to qualify that person for admission as an Australian Lawyer and living or working within the Geographical area;

  • a past member of the Law Institute of Victoria; or

  • has other qualifications, experience or connection to the legal profession that the Committee determines appropriate.

A Member (any category) whose eligibility criteria changes must notify the Secretary who will adjust their membership, and the register of members, to the appropriate category to comply with their eligibility criteria.

Application for membership

To apply to become a member of any category of membership of the Association, a person must submit a written application to a committee member stating that the person—

  • Wishes to become a member of the Association;

  • Supports the purposes of the Association;

  • Agrees to comply with these Rules; and

  • Complies with the eligibility criteria set out in Rule 8.

The application—

  • must be signed by the applicant; and

  • may be accompanied by the joining fee. (The current fee is nil.)

You may also join the Young Lawyers Section if you are a practitioner under the age of 36; a practitioner over the age of 36 with less than six years of post-admission experience; a Graduate, Trainee or Law Students.
